An Apéro Science in Montpellier on abandoned farmland
On March 24, 2026, an “Apéro Science” event was held at the restaurant Esencia in Montpellier, bringing together SPADES researchers with citizens in a structured yet convivial setting. The purpose of this gathering was to present and discuss ongoing research on abandoned farmland, with a particular focus on the SPADES pilot case study of the Pays Cœur d’Hérault.
The presentation was organized around photos of different landscapes that could be perceived as abandoned farmland. It provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges associated with this land. It highlighted how soil quality and loss of fertility represent critical concerns for the future management of abandoned farmland. Beyond environmental aspects, the discussion also addressed socio-economic and land management challenges, such as access to water, land ownership or fire risk management. Eventually, attention was drawn to the range of strategies currently being implemented by local stakeholders in order to rehabilitate these set-aside lands.
Following the presentation, participants engaged in an open and constructive discussion. This exchange offered an opportunity for dialogue between scientists and citizens, fostering mutual understanding and encouraging the sharing of diverse perspectives. By facilitating informed discussions in an accessible environment, this Apéro Science contributed to strengthening connections between research activities and societal concerns related to land use, rural development and soil quality.
