SPADES in Europe Day celebrations
On May 7th, the municipality of Ooststellingwerf marked Europe Day by bringing together residents, local authorities and experts to reflect on the value of European cooperation in addressing today’s social and environmental challenges. SPADES was invited to contribute to the programme by hosting a session.
Linda Maring (expert soil and subsurface at Deltares), together with intern Pien Wismans, presented the SPADES project. They showed how SPADES works to integrate soil knowledge, data and needs into spatial planning processes at both local and European levels.
The programme also featured SOILCRATES, with Emiel Elferink sharing insights on soil health and management. Together, these sessions highlighted the importance of connecting science, practice, and communication when addressing soil and spatial planning challenges.
The event underlined the broader relevance of European collaboration in projects like SPADES, where shared knowledge helps improve soil management approaches beyond national borders.
As the alderman of Ooststellingwerf concluded:
“Challenges related to soil, climate and sustainability do not stop at national borders. By working together with partners from other European countries, we can share knowledge, learn from one another and jointly develop solutions that we would never be able to achieve on our own.”
